Topic/Theme/Purpose Statement
Big Questions:
Why study fractions? So what?
- Fractions help us see how to share and how a part relates to a whole
- We could share with our friends, we couldn't equally divide things, and we couldn't even buy things
- Increased number sense and parts making a whole, equal sharing
Purpose Statement
Fractions should be taught to first graders because they already have a basic number sense of whole numbers, and fractions allow the number sense to continue. Fractions also allow students to understand how something can be equally shared between two, three, or four people, which further makes everyone happy. Fractions help students understand halves, thirds, and wholes. Which will give way to multiplication and division concepts.
